Topical treatments for male hair loss have been shown effective for treating alopecia caused by DHT accumulation and for temporary thinning due to excessive oil, bacteria or chemicals.

A topical treatment is usually delivered in one of three forms - sprays, foams, and concentrated drops.  Active ingredients are most commonly Trichogen or Minoxidil.  Trichogen is a botanical complex developed to neutralize the damaging effects of dihydrotestosterone (DHT).  DHT is formed by the conversion of 5 alpha reductase enzymes and accumulates in the male testes and pores - where it restricts nutrients, blood circulation on the scalp, and leads to male pattern balding.

Trichogen®, similarly to Minoxidil®, helps stimulate root development and provides topical nutrition to encourage growth and reducing thinning.  It is used in various concentrations depending on the delivery system and desired outcome.

  • Sprays - Also known as follicle stimulators or root stimulants, sprays generally contain Trichogen® concentrations of 8-10%.  They also are blended with ingredients such as Panthenol, Jojoba Oil, and conditioning agents.  Acting similarly to a leave-in conditioner, they help nourish the follicles by strengthening the follicle shaft and increasing pliability and elasticity.  They often improve shine, luster and volume, and are designed to be used daily as a restorative and preventive hair loss treatment.  Sprays can be worked in with the fingers before styling, combing or brushing.
  • Foams - Foams work well for spot applications and generally have higher concentrations of Minoxidil or Trichogen.  Targeted application is the key, and there are a number of companies using these applicators - Nioxin® and DS Laboratories in its' Spectral® line of products to name two.
  • Concentrated Drops - Often containing the highest concentrations of Trichogen, 10-12%, these treatments are intended to be used in localized applications where visible or noticeable loss or thinning has begun.  They are often blended with concentrated Biotin and extracts to improve circulation, provide intense nutrients in the form of vitamins, and to neutralize problematic enzymatic DHT hormones.

The active ingredients in topical treatments for hair loss have proven effective for stopping or slowing thinning due to DHT or "Diffuse" hair loss.  Follicle stimulators, concentrated foams of localized applications help encourage new, natural growth, and provide substantial nutrition for thicker, faster hair growth.
